The sponsor of this website, http://progress.psu.edu (“progress.psu.edu” or the “Progress Website”), is Penn State (“we”, “our” or “us”), but please be advised that this privacy statement governs only http://progress.psu.edu and does not govern any other area of http://www.psu.edu. Our Commitment to Privacy

We respect and value your privacy. This statement outlines our privacy practices for the Progress Website. By design we seek to avoid any marketing communication or related marketing communications on the Progress Website, given that the progress.psu.edu site is solely dedicated to communications regarding Penn State’s outstanding high-profile investigations, legal matters, and updates on the initiatives we have put in place to address the serious issue of child abuse.  However, to maintain communications on the Progress Website and keep the Penn State community informed, there is some minimal amount of information collected.  This statement is designed to assist you in understanding how we collect, use and safeguard information from progress.psu.edu and to assist you in making informed decisions when using the Progress Website.

You should read and familiarize yourself with this Privacy Statement and with our Terms and Conditions. When you use the Progress Website, you agree to abide by both the Privacy Statement and the Terms and Conditions of progress.psu.edu.  The University respects your privacy and is committed to protecting any personally identifiable information that you provide to us.

Information That We Collect

  • Collection of Non-Personally Identifiable Information:  Penn State’s web servers automatically capture non-personally identifiable information including—but not limited to—domain name, IP address of the web page you used to enter the Progress Website, the pages you visit on the Progress Website, your click-through rates and the amount of time you spend on the Progress Website. However, this data is used to determine website server statistics.  We may use and analyze the resultant statistics to determine trends and improve the Progress Website. Any non-personally identifiable information that we share with third parties will be in aggregate form only.
  • Collection of Personally Identifiable Information:  If you choose to subscribe to the Progress Website for e-mail updates, you will be required to submit personal information such as your e-mail address. If you choose to withhold the requested information, you can continue to use the Progress Website but may be unable to access certain offers (e.g., e-mail newsletter or a news feed). We will not voluntarily provide any personally-identifiable information to third parties without your consent, unless we reasonably believe that the release of such information is necessary: (1) to comply with legal requirements or legal process; (2) to protect and defend the rights or property of the University or (3) to protect the public or other users of the Progress Website.

Submitted Content

The Progress Website does not currently allow for any user-submitted comments or posts that are automatically shared publicly. Any content submitted via e-mail will not be publicly posted (including your e-mail address, phone number or address) without your consent.

Cookies and Similar Devices 

When you visit our Progress Website, we may place a cookie, or similar device, on your computer that will allow us to track your visit to the Progress Website and help us continue to improve the content and navigation. The cookies will not provide us with any personally-identifiable information about you nor would we use any cookie information to market to you.  However, if you choose to do so, you may prevent placement of cookies by following the instructions contained in the Help section of your browser.

In addition to the general browser cookies, we use "Flash cookies" that are built for use with the Adobe® Flash® Player in order to play video files we upload regarding the ongoing investigations at Penn State.  To delete or prevent placement of Flash cookies, you will need to visit the Adobe Flash Player Help site at www.adobe.com/go/settingsmanager, click on the hyperlink for "Progress Website Privacy Settings panel" on the left hand side of the screen and follow the instructions for preventing third-party Flash content from storing data on your computer.

We also use web beacons (also known as clear gifs or pixel tags), which are images that we incorporate onto the Progress Website to collect usage statistics.  Because Web Beacons or clear gifs are included within the recipe for a web page (just the same as any other content request), you cannot opt out or refuse them.  But, we will not use any information from these web beacons or this Progress Website, for that matter, for marketing purposes.

We may elect to use other similar devices for the same purposes in the future.

Security

We collect very little information on this Progress Website.  But, in the unlikely event that you send information to us, any information that you send, including e-mail messages, will not be encrypted unless otherwise noted.  Although our Progress Website uses other industry-standard security measures to protect the loss, misuse an alteration of information that is under our control, we cannot guarantee complete security.

Changes to Statement

Our Privacy Statement may change over time.  Material changes to this Progress Website will be posted 30 days before they become effective.  Your continued use of the Progress Website after these changes become effective will constitute your consent to any changes.
